Lured by the Lamplight
Chapter One - Ophelia.
There were some things Ophelia could never explain.
The strange feeling that had come over her that evening, the reason she had left the house, and most of all, the light.
It had appeared just after dusk. A warm, golden glow deep within the woods. At first, Ophelia thought it was a lantern. Perhaps one of the groundsmen had left it burning.
But the estate was quiet that evening, and no one had any reason to be in that part of the forest.
She stood at the edge of the trees, watching it. The light seemed impossibly distant. Then it disappeared.
Ophelia waited.
A moment later it appeared again. Further into the woods. She should have returned to the house. Instead, she gathered her skirts and stepped beneath the trees.
The forest was unusually still. There was no wind. No birdsong. Even the insects seemed silent. Only the soft sound of Ophelia's footsteps disturbed the darkness.
The light appeared again. Closer now. She followed.
The trees opened suddenly into a small clearing.
And there, standing alone upon the moss-covered earth, was the most peculiar thing Ophelia had ever seen.
A lamp.
An old floor lamp with a crimson shade and delicate fringe.
There was no house. No chair. No other furniture. No explanation.
Just the lamp.
And it was lit.
Ophelia stopped several paces away. She stared at it. Something about the lamp felt familiar.
Not familiar in the way an object from home might feel familiar. Something deeper.
As though she had been searching for it without ever knowing she was searching.
She slowly approached. The golden light illuminated her face. She reached out her hand.
Then stopped.
She did not touch it.
Instead, she stood perfectly still, mesmerised by the light.
The forest remained silent.
Ophelia looked around.
Nothing.
No one.
She was completely alone. Then the lamp flickered.
Once.
Twice.
And went out.
Ophelia gasped.
The darkness was absolute.
For several seconds she could see nothing. Then, slowly, a faint glow appeared above the clearing.
Ophelia looked up. Between the branches, the night sky seemed to be changing. A pale light was gathering somewhere high above the trees.
At first, it looked like moonlight. Then it grew brighter. Much brighter. The lamp remained dark.
But the light above her continued to strengthen.
Ophelia stepped backwards. She should have been frightened. Instead, she felt an extraordinary calmness.
The light seemed warm.
Inviting.
Almost familiar.
She looked upward.
The branches above her began to glow. A narrow beam descended through the canopy.
It touched the earth several feet in front of her. Dust and tiny particles floated within it, turning slowly in the air like stars.
Ophelia stared. She took one hesitant step towards it. Then another. The beam moved with her.
She stopped. It stopped.
She smiled faintly.
For the first time that evening, she understood. The lamp had never been the source of the light. It had merely been waiting for her to find it.
Ophelia stepped into the beam.
The instant she did, the world seemed to disappear.
The trees, the earth, the night. Everything fell away. There was only light.
She lifted her face towards it. Her expression changed. Wonder replaced fear.
Her eyes widened as though she were seeing something no human being had ever seen before.
She raised her hands slowly towards the heavens and then dropped them to her sides.
The light surrounded her.
Her dress moved gently though there was no wind. The beam grew brighter. Brighter still.
Ophelia did not look away. She could not. She was completely transfixed.
And in that final moment, just before the light became too bright to see anything at all, Ophelia smiled.
Then—
darkness.
The forest returned.
The lamp was gone.
There was no sign that Ophelia had ever been there.
Only a small patch of flattened grass remained beneath the trees.
And high above the clearing, something moved silently through the darkness.
Something that had come for her. Something that would come again. Somewhere. Someday. For someone else.
And perhaps that was the secret of the lamp.
It was never meant to be found.
It was meant to be followed.
And Ophelia was only the beginning……………………….
